문득 떠오른 글 찾기

대학교 다닐 당시 독서써클 회지에서 읽었던 선배의 글이 문득 떠올라 그 글이 나온 회지 찾기를 몇개월여.. 드디어 그 회지를 보관하고 계신 다른 선배님의 도움으로 찾아낼 수 있었습니다. 제 기억은 체념과 죽음, 자유에 대한 의미심장한 내용(!?)의 글이었는데, 지금 읽으니 그 당시와 사뭇 다른 느낌을 받게 됩니다.

5년여의 대학생활에 대한 소회를 적으면서 글 말미에 자신이 읽었다는 칼 폴라니의 글을 재인용하고 있었는데요. 찾아보니 칼 폴라니의 거대한 전환(The Great Transformation)이라는 책의 마지막 장(Chapter 21. FREEDOM IN A COMPLEX SOCIETY) 마지막 문단에 있는 내용이었습니다.

"체념이야말로 언제나 인간에게 힘과 새로운 용기를 불어넣는 원천이었다. 인간은 죽음이라는 실재를 받아들이고 그것을 전제로 하여 구체적인 삶의 의미를 구성해냈다. 그 체념의 내용은, 인간의 영혼은 언젠가 잃을 수 밖에 없는 것이지만, 동시에 죽음보다 더 못한 상태가 있다는 것인데, 인간은 이러한 전제에서 자유를 창출해냈던 것이다. 우리 시대에서 우리는 사회의 실재(the reality of society)에 체념해야 하는데 그것은 앞서서의 자유의 종말을 의미하는 것이다. 하지만 이 경우에도 그 궁극적인 체념은 생명의 힘을 불어넣어 준다. 사회의 실재라는 현실에 묵묵히 복종함을 통해 인간은 (모든 부정과 부자유를 제거할) 꺾이지 않는 용기와 힘을 얻게 된다. 모든 이들에게 보다 풍요로운 자유를 제공한다는 임무를 성실히 수행하는 한, 우리는 권력 그리고 계획화 등이 인간의 적으로 변하여 우리가 그것들을 구축하고 있는 자유를 파괴할 지도 모른다는 두려움은 가질 필요가 없다. 바로 이것이 복합 사회(complex society)에서의 자유의 의미이다. 이것이 우리에게 필요한 신념을 불어넣어 줄 것이다."

Resignation was ever the fount of man's strength and new hope., Man accepted the reality of death and built the meaning of his bodily life upon it. He resigned himself to the truth that he had a soul to lose and that there was worse than death, and founded his freedom upon it. He resigns himself, in our time, to the reality of society which means the end of that freedom. But, again, life springs from ultimate resignation. Uncomplaining acceptance of the reality of society gives man indomitable courage and strength to remove all removable injustice and unfreedom. As long as he is true to his task of creating more abundant freedom for all, he need not fear that either power or planning will turn against him and destroy the freedom he is building by their instrumentality. This is the meaning of freedom in a complex society; it gives us all the certainty that we need.
